Énergir is sensitive to the reality of low-income households and offers two programs specifically designed to help people experiencing energy poverty:

  • The Supplement for Low-Income Households, $220 in financial assistance in addition to the $100 grant for the purchase of a smart thermostat1.
  • The Social Support Help Program (SSHP), which supports low-income households with payment challenges by providing accommodations adapted to their financial capacity so they can continue receiving Énergir services.
  • 10 %

If a household spends 10% or more of its income on utilities, it is experiencing energy poverty. In Quebec, depending on the indicator used, between 9% and 16% of households are in this situation3.

Potential additional support for low-income tenants

Énergir also provides additional financial assistance to low-income households living in rental buildings owned by a private landlord, a non-profit organization or a housing cooperative. If the owner applies for a grant under one of the following energy-efficiency programs2, 60% of the additional assistance is distributed among the low-income households living in the building (if the grant is approved):

Example: The owner of a building with six units, three of which are occupied by low-income households, purchases a condensing unit heater for the building. He is entitled to a $2,900 grant for the purchase and installation of the unit heater, as well as the increased amount under the LIH program.

The Supplement for Low-Income Households is calculated as follows:
