A strategic energy plan can help optimize your energy use and reduce your GHG emissions regardless of the size of your business and your annual energy costs.

Like a strategic customer development or retention plan, a strategic energy plan is a proactive, structured roadmap that guides you towards specific goals. It helps you strategize to meet your future needs, taking into account local and global trends, technological innovations and environmental imperatives. It can also reduce risk, help you stand out from the competition, create added value and improve your resilience.

A strategic energy plan has a number of benefits:

  • It helps you develop a vision
  • It facilitates cost control
  • It clarifies your goals and how to achieve them
  • It sets out key milestones and performance indicators to check progress towards your goals
  • It helps you plan for the required resources
  • It contributes to the company’s reputation
  • It promotes long-term competitiveness

Plan structure

Take a four-step approach to optimize your energy performance and achieve your goals:

  1. 1

    Plan:

Start by setting clear energy efficiency goals, such as reducing consumption or GHG emissions. First, conduct an energy audit to identify consumption points and opportunities for improvement. On that basis, develop an action plan with the measures to be implemented, the budget and the monitoring indicators.

  2. 2

    Implement:

Take action by implementing the planned measures such as installing equipment, improving insulation or optimizing systems. Ensure teams are trained to properly use the new equipment, and tell stakeholders about the changes.

  3. 3

    Check:

Measure the results and compare them to your goals. Track actual consumption, verify equipment compliance and analyze any discrepancies. This step will confirm the effectiveness of what you did or will identify points to be corrected.

  4. 4

    Act:

Make the necessary adjustments to improve performance. Document best practices and lessons learned, to build on the experience. Finally, restart a new PICA cycle to pursue continuous improvement.
