Continuous improvement of a company’s or organization’s energy performance requires implementation of an energy management system (EMS) with a structured and dynamic process for monitoring energy consumption.
Improve your practices to use less energy, more efficiently
An EMS includes behavioural and operational changes at all levels of the organization to increase energy efficiency and reduce waste.
Inspired by the international energy management standard ISO 50001, an EMS makes it possible to gradually adopt best practices that ultimately deliver many benefits:
- Recurring reductions in energy costs (approximately 5%)
- Reduced carbon footprint
- Increased competitiveness (doing more with less)
- Internal control of energy consumption
- Enhanced brand image
“One of the main strengths of an EMS is the implementation of small, incremental changes that, when combined, help reduce energy bills for less money than traditional energy efficiency measures, which involve equipment purchases and often costly implementation.”

A logical and progressive approach
Implementing an EMS is a multi-year process with several major steps:
- 1
Diagnostics
which provide a baseline energy profile and establish the foundation for deploying the EMS.
- 2
Development and implementation
of the EMS in the form of policies and consumption reduction objectives.
- 3
Monitoring
to validate effectiveness, correct deviations where necessary and continuously optimize energy performance.
An EMS therefore entails the continuous collection of operational data to evaluate and progressively improve facility energy performance. Collected through meters, flow meters, sensors and other measurement devices, this data is stored in an energy management information system (EMIS) and analyzed by an energy management committee. This multidisciplinary team defines EMS energy objectives, reviews them regularly and reports results to senior management.

Take advantage of our grants!
To support you in deploying an EMS, Énergir offers grants1 for each major step of the process. This program will be harmonized with Hydro-Québec’s program during the winter of 2026 to simplify participation.
